Thinking Thursdays

Water beads are an excellent sensory activity, and can be used differently depending on the child’s age group.

For younger children you can place water beads in a ziplock bag so they can still feel and move the beads, or place a clear container. Add some extra water and sequins to the container for a greater visual experience when the container is shaken. For ziplock bags, opt for double sealed bags, like those from Ikea, or tape the top for extra protection. Keeping these beads in a container or bag is crucial for young children to ensure that they are not ingested and to ensure they are not a choking hazard.

For older children, who are no longer mouthing, water beads provide great tactile opportunities. Children can practise their fine motor skills by pouring and scooping the beads into different containers. Giving children different sized jugs, ladles, spoons and funnels provide endless experimentation. Children can also experiment with squashing or cutting the beads. For children who are older, but still love putting things in their mouth, you can swap water beads for coloured and cookr tapioca pearls. These are safe to eat, so there isn’t as much of a worry. Visit A Little Pinch of Perfect for instructions on how to prepare these.

Have you used water beads before? How do you incorporate them into play?
